Karonga Water Supply Project to commence with 10,000 new connections

About 10,000 new water connections will be made following the completion of the Karonga Water Supply Project. The development promises to enhance accessibility of clean water in the district and surrounding areas.
A pivotal phase of the Karonga Water Supply Project is well underway as the project approaches its final stages. According to the Northern Region Waterboard’s Facebook page, the installation of a new raw water pipeline on Monday morning marked a significant leap towards completion.
Designed to meet the growing demands of the region, the new pipeline boasts of a capacity to abstract over 1.3 million liters per hour. This vital resource will feed into the 30 million-liter treatment plant, a stark improvement over the current facility’s maximum output of 12 million liters per day, which has long struggled to keep pace with demand.
In addition to the treatment plant upgrade, the project includes the construction of seven new concrete tanks with a combined storage capacity of 11.6 million liters. This substantial increase from the current 1.8 million-liter capacity signifies a bold step towards ensuring adequate water reserves for the community.
The ripple effect of the Karonga Water Supply Project extends far beyond its immediate vicinity. With plans to extend water supply to Nyungwe en route to Mzuzu, as well as to Pusi en route to Songwe and Mpata en route to Chitipa, the project is poised to serve over 189,000 individuals in Karonga Town and its surrounding areas.
Financed by the OPEC Fund, BADEA – Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, and the Malawi Government, the US$26.7 million project is set for completion later this month.
