The Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee is threatening to summon the Director of the Anti Corruption Bureau if they see no progress on the ADMARC maize scandal issue.

In a case of what may seem as finally bowing down to pressure, Malawi’s President, Peter Mutharika has fired Agriculture Minister George Chaponda from cabinet.

Suspended Agriculture Minister George Chaponda insists his trip to Zambia accompanying an ADMARC delegation was purely to offer policy direction on the botched maize deal with that country.

Agriculture minister George Chaponda, who is restricted by the courts from carrying out his work, is believed to have left the country for official duties in Germany, Capital FM investigations can reveal.

The Agriculture Committee of Parliament is set to start investigation on the maize scandal involving the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) on the 17th of this month.

Maize sales at the ADMARC depot in Malawi’s Northern district of Karonga on February 24th got interrupted following a commotion that ensued between police and the buyers.

The scarcity of maize flour on the market is having a spill-over effect on prices of its complimentary commodities on the market, spot-checks by Capital FM have established.

The public should expect a slight increase in prices of maize from private traders with the onset of the planting season.
