Child cancer treatment services at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre are set to improve soon following the imminent installation of a chemotherapy machine at the referral facility.

The scheduled K1.8 million venture in the 34-bed child cancer ward comes courtesy of female employees of local telecommunications giant, TNM Plc.

Speaking after a cheque presentation ceremony on Friday, TNM’s acting human resource and administration manager Harriet Mariani said the female staffs’ gesture was part of International Women’s Day celebrations.

“We are a Malawian company and we cannot just celebrate this day without looking at people that are less fortunate.

“After reaching out to them (QECH), we appreciated that the children’s section has a need. The authorities told us that the chemotherapy machine needed maintenance. So, we saw that we can actually help with the little that we can manage,” said Mariani.

Mariani added that: “The money we have donated, is going to go towards the installation of the chemotherapy machine. The ward has a machine but it was not installed because they didn’t have funding for it.”

Meanwhile, the matron of the child cancer ward at QECH Anizia Kamwendo described the donation as timely.

“The situation was very bad. We were preparing the drugs on open space, which is not supposed to be like that. Ideally, when you’re preparing the chemotherapy, you prepare it inside the machine such that nobody is exposed to the medication, whether through inhalation or through spillage.” Kamwendo explained.

According to the matron, the installation of the machine means radiation among others will be reduced.
