Exportation of raw soya beans banned

The government has effected a ban on the exportation of raw soya beans.

This comes as a national crop estimate carried out by the ministry of agriculture indicate a 22 percent decline in production of the crop.

This is as a result of the adverse weather conditions experienced in the current farming season in Malawi.

According to the ministry of trade spokesperson Patrick Botha the restriction will help local industries and investors in the soya bean value chain to access the crop.

“Soya bean is the main raw material in the production processes of by-products which include cooking oil and soya cake among others,” said Botha

Botha went on to say that the directive is also in line with the National Development Plan.

He said; “We have revoked all previous licences on exportation of raw soya beans issue by the ministry under the Control of Goods Act.”

The ministry has since revoked all previous licences on exportation or raw soya beans and they will not be valid from Monday next week.
