City authorities in Mzuzu have expressed concern over the location of the Airport inside the city, saying it is obstructing development in Malawi’s northern region urban centre.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of Mzuzu City, McCloud Kadam’manja, the continued existence of the airport close to a trading centre is a mockery to the city’s development plans and that the facility is under-utilized.

Kadam’manja said if the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), through the Ministry of Transport and Public Works understood the council’s development plan, it would have relocated the airport to another area long time ago.

According to the city’s chief executive, being part of Mzuzu City’s Trading Centre, the area where the airport is located is meant for big and tall structures that signify the true picture of a city centre.

He added that the council has been pushing for the airport’s relocation, but to no avail.

The city’s chief observed that Mzuzu City has been missing out on hosting big events and other international conferences because of the absence of a ‘proper’ airport.

Mzuzu Airport Commandant, Oscar Chihana, told MANA that his department has all the plans to relocate the airport but a lack of funding is delaying the enactment of the plan.

By air Mzuzu city is served by the Mzuzu Airport. There are plans to construct a new and bigger airport by the government. It also has well built roads that are not keeping pace with the development of the growing city. Its industrial area has poor roads not befitting its status. This has been attributed to poor governance.

Mzuzu is the capital of Malawi's Northern Region and is the third largest city, by population, in Malawi. The City has over 300,000 residents with about 1.7 million people living around the outskirts of the city.
