Police in Malawi have issued a warrant of arrest for the country’s former president Joyce Banda over her alleged involvement in the Cashgate Scandal.

The warrant was granted to the law enforcers by the Lilongwe Magistrate’s court on Monday.

Speaking to Capital FM, National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera confirmed the issuance of the warrant.

Kadadzera said that as police they have done investigations and unearthed credible evidence which raised suspicions over her involvement.

Joyce Banda is alleged to have committed offences relating to abuse of office and money laundering.

“We will engage Interpol on the matter because Banda is currently outside the country, the member states of Interpol will assist us,” Kadadzera added.

Banda, who was president from 2012 to 2014, leftthe country in September 2014 after coming third in elections a few months earlier, and she has given a myriad of reasons as to why she has not returned ever since.
