Malawians will have to wait longer before they know the truth behind the fire that razed down the offices of the Ministry of Agriculture at Capitol Hill in Lilongwe on the 14 February in 2017.

The Fire-fighters’ late arrival meant when they arrived on the scene the fire had already caused extent damage to the offices.

The fire came few days after findings by a Commission of Inquiry which was instituted by President Peter Mutharika had recommended that the minister be investigated by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) over alleged suspicious corrupt practices in the maize purchase from Zambia.

Chaponda has since been acquitted on all the charges he was answering.

Critics were of the view that the fire incident might have been a plot to destroy evidence.

The police have, for over a year, been giving the same response that they are still investigating the matter.

But up to date they haven’t come out in the open on what they found out as the cause of the fire.

The ACB through its Senior Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala has told Capital FM that they are not in a position to investigate such an issue because it is not related to corruption but rather arson.

“Arson is not a corruption case. It is a penal code offense that is handled by the police,” Ndala elaborated.

National Police James Kadadzera however tells Capital FM that he is yet to get new information from the team which was investigating the matter.

Buildings like that belonging to ESCOM along the Haile Selassie in the commercial capital, Blantyre and the MEC warehouse in Lilongwe were also gutted in 2013 and 2014 respectively and the public has been raising suspicions on the causes of such fires.
