Youth in the Climate Change and Environmental Sector have asked the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources to table the Disaster Risk Management Bill by the end this parliament session.

Among others, the bill proposes the transformation of the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) into a commission with full mandate to operate independently.

On Monday, the youth grouping delivered a petition to parliament and gave the Parliamentary Committee an ultimatum to have the bill is tabled by close of business yesterday.

Speaking outside the Parliament building on Monday afternoon, National Youth Network on Climate Change (NYNCC) National Coordinator Dominic Nyasulu, highlighted the need for the August house to pass the bill.

Nyasulu  said this will help in coming up with concrete solutions when disasters hit the country in future, therefore legislators should pass the bill before the end of this sitting.

Some members of the Parliamentary Committee led by Chairperson Welani Chilenga received the petition, and shared concerns by the youth group over delays by the House to deliberate and pass the bill.

In response to the youth grouping call, Chilenga, highlighted that the proposed legislation is very crucial to disaster management processes.

Chilenga submitted to the urgent need for the bill to become law, to prevent some of the challenges that arise amidst natural disasters.
