Four supplementary activities have been announced leading up to the 2016 Urban Music Party (UMP) Festival Awards gala this November.

Produced by Ndefeyo Entertainment Company, the 2016 UMP Fest will among other contests feature dance displays, DJ performances and a fashion show.

A dozen acts are this year’s going to be recognised for their contribution to Malawi’s urban culture

The road to the fifth edition of the Urban Music Party Festival will commence on October 8 as nominees are set to be announced at an event to take place in Lilongwe.

For the past three weeks fans had been nominating their favourite acts through SMS.  The nomination process ends by on October 3.

From October 8 to November 3 fans will vote for the nominees in the categories of:

- Artist of the Year;

- Song of the Year;

- Best New Artist;

- Producer of the Year;

- Music Video of the Year;

- Album of the Year;

- Best Hip Hop/Rap Act;

- Best Dancehall Act;

- Best R&B/Afro-pop Act;

- Best Music Video Director; and

- Best Gospel Artist.

Producers have included the Best Female Act, which makes the number of categories in the 2016 UMP Awards rise to 12 from the initial 11.

The winner of this category will be crowned by a panel of judges comprising of ex-radio Poet Q Malewezi, Arts reporter Yvonne Sundu, ex-radio personality Molowere Gwembere and entertainment promoter Peter Chiwayula.

Two days before the UMP Fest awards gala on November 6 deejays will battle for the 2016 UMP Fest DJ of year.

Confirmed contestants include DJ Trick, the 2016 Carlsberg Chill DJ Battle winner and Nathan Tunes.

On the eve of the main event to be held at the BAT Ground in Blantyre the runway will be opened for designers and models to showcase the latest in fashion.

The UMP Fashion Night which will also feature Media Awards will take place at the Underground Car Park at Chichiri shopping mall in Blantyre.

The Media Awards will reward excellence in the area of entertainment, arts and culture news writing.

November 8 is when artists and fans alike will converge in Blantyre to witness the 2016 UMP Fest award ceremony which will feature live music by more than 20 urban performers including Gemini Major, Popp Dogg, Theo Thomson, Bucci, Sonye, Sangie, Nepman and Blaze.


In addition, the award gala will feature an open session for up and coming music performers and dancers.
