Sports ladies cry for Gender Policy

A call is going out to the government to consider formulating a Gender Policy in sports that will help in addressing challenges affecting women athletes and administrators.

The call has been made by High Court Judge, Zione Ntaba, in her capacity as chairperson for the Women and Sports in Malawi.

She made the sentiments in Blantyre during the graduation ceremony of 22 female athletes and administrators.

The 22 have been awarded a diploma in women leadership each having successfully completed a two year course.

Ntaba says that the blueprint should be able to help women who are being victims of sexual harassment, discrimination and stigmatization.

“We want resources that will assure women of being looked after as well as being assisted from any form of violation in sports.” She highlighted.

One of the graduates, Chimwemwe Msowoya, says they have now been equipped with knowledge on reporting matters on any abuse.

She said, “it is time to work together with all concerned stakeholders so as to avoid challenges being faced at the moment.”

While acknowledging that they are aware of the challenges facing women in sports, the Malawi National Council of Sports through its Acting Executive Secretary, Shephord Boma, has assured all women in sports of a long lasting solution on their concerns.

He says currently they are currently doing a lot of projects towards motivating the women, “as government we also assisting these women at international level. This year we will be sending at least five of them to Regional 5 meeting where they will represent Malawi in terms of women leadership progress.”

Women and Sports in Malawi is a women’s rights in sports organisation which is an affiliate of the Malawi National Council of Sports.
