With almost two years left to the deadline of the projects under the compact, there are fears over the fate of the Millennium Challenge Account-MCA.

Some believe that Malawi’s programme will be terminated once President-elect Donald Trump officially takes over the US on the twentieth of this month.

Malawi and the United States of America signed a USD350 million pact towards improving the local power sector.

Representatives of MCA are giving assurances that the change of leadership in the US will not affect the current compact.

Responding to such fears, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of MCA-Malawi Lameck Mithi disclosed that pullout decisions are not made amidst a progressive pact.

Mithi added that the funds were already approved in the Millennium Challenge Compact’s-MCC budget under the Obama administration.

He was however quick to point out that, what Malawi should be worried about is whether it will be able to qualify for the next compact.
