Mafikizolo To Mark Third Performance In Mw Featured

South African music group, Mafikizolo, is next month expected to mark its third performance in Malawi.

Organised by Malawi’s Fepo Music Entertainment Company and KCP, a South African music label, the live gig will take place on 23 December at the BICC in the capital, Lilongwe.

It was in 2002 that Mafizikolo first performed in the country. The show was staged at the Kamuzu Stadium in the commercial city, Blantyre.

During that period a long afro-dress worn by the group’s songstress, Nhlanhla Nciza, took the southern Africa nation by storm with many women adopting its style which was famously referred to as Mafikizolo.

On their tour of Malawi, Mafikizolo shared the stage with controversial kwaito musician, Mzekemzeke.

Though it has not been categorically proven, many South Africans believe that Mzekemzeke, who used to perform covered in a mask, is in reality DJ Sbu born, Sibusiso Leope.

Ironically, DJ Sbu and Thembinkosi Nciza, Nhlanhla’s husband, are joint-owners of TS Records, the record label that manages Mafikizolo.

Months after their return to South Africa, the group released “Zikomo” a special dedication to Malawian fans for supporting the group which was then a trio.

12 years later, Mafikizolo headlined the 11th edition of the annual Lake Of Stars Malawi Arts Festival on 26 September, 2014 in Mangochi district, located along the southern shores of Lake Malawi.

This was after the group made a comeback from a 10 year break, a period in which it lost its third member Tebogo Madingoane, leaving Nhlanla and Theo Kgosinkwe.

Tebongo was shot dead in the township of Soweto on 14 February, 2004.

It was on its return in 2013 that Mafikizolo reinvented by collaborating with contemporary artists Davido, Mr May D and Uhuru, a move that landed the afro-house group a Song of the Year accolade at the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards, a Channel O Most Gifted Dance Video for “Khona” and a performance at the BET Awards.

Mafikizolo are three-time winners of the South African Music Award for Group or Duo of the Year.

The duet’s hits include “Happiness”, “Tchelete”, “Ndihamba Nawe” and “Emlanjeni”.

Jazz Kid of Nigeria, South African songstress Ambani Queen of House famed for the afro-house hit “Marry me”, King Soja and Shumza have been announced are the international acts expected to share the stage with the duet.

Malawian acts Lulu and Theo Thomson will perform as opening acts on the night.

Representatives of Fepo Music and KCP have exclusively confirmed to Capital FM that Summer Jam Africa will be an annual live gig.
