Raphael Banda was sentenced alongside his accomplices, Chipiliro Wonderford and Zakaliya Wyson.
Earlier this month community members at Ntonda trading center caught them as they were attempting to break into a shop.
Appearing in court Tuesday, the three pleaded not guilty to the charge.
But the state through Police prosecutor Evans Kamtukule paraded three witnesses to prove the case against the convicts in which the court was satisfied.
The state then asked the court for a stiffer punishment considering that the convicts had tarnished the image of the Malawi Police Service.
Apart from that, the state adds that the suspects were a threat to society since they are also expected to answer a similar charge.
Hoping for a mitigated sentence, all convicts pleaded with the court for leniency saying they are bread winners.
In his ruling First Grade Magistrate Chrispin Sachuluka quashed the mitigation factors and then agreed with the state for a stiffer punishment.
Sachuluka disclosed that it will be hard for Malawi Police Service to win back trust from the public due to Banda's involvement in the attempted robbery hence sentencing the three to an 8 year jail term with hard labour.
Constable Raphael Banda whose employment number is B1490, joined the Malawi Police Service in 2008 under Ntcheu police station.
