Police in Kanengo, Lilongwe, have expressed concern over the rise in cases of drug pilferage in the country.

They are currently keeping in custody a 40 year old woman for alleged illegal possession of medical drugs.

According to Kanengo Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Salome Chibwana, the police were tipped off by well wishers that Emily Chiwaya was selling drugs with no proper prescription.

Posing as prospective customers, the police cornered her near the National Food Reserve Agency in the industrial area.

Upon searching her, the suspect, Emily Chiwanga Chiwanga was found with over twelve different kinds of medical drugs.

According to Chibwana, Chiwanga admitted that she was a drug dealer and that she purchased the drugs from pharmacies.

A further search at her house revealed more drugs and the police established that her house was a known clinic and pharmacy in the area.

Chiwanga is expected to appear before court to answer charges of Possession of Medical Drugs without License.

Commentators are of the view that drug pilferage in public hospitals is still a major problem that is derailing development.
