Malawi’s Elderly Flood Victims To Rebuild Their Lives

Written by  manaonline.gov.mw Mar 27, 2017

Elderly people who were left homeless by floods early this year in Salima district are receiving cash from the Malawi Network of Older Persons Organisation-MANEPO.

The money is meant to help them rebuild their homes.

The network, in collaboration with Red Cross Malawi is carrying out the flood response cash transfer programme, which is expected to benefit over 344 households.

The National Coordinator for MANEPO, Andrew Kavala explained that the network decided to target shelter in its donations.

The decision was made after an assessment discovered that shelter was the main challenge for the elderly.

Each household received MK45, 000 cash to reconstruct their houses destroyed by the floods.

Kavala told the Malawi News Agency that for transparency and accountability’s sake, they engaged a third party Telecom Network Malawi-TNM to handle the cash transfers.

The floods which did not hit only flood prone districts affected over 10,000 people.
