Young people in Blantyre have taken an initiative to encourage sanitation in the country, in a quest to combat the spread of Covid-19 and other diseases that come because of unhygienic practices.
Operating under the banner, Bwalo la Ana Youth Active Organisation-BLAYACO, the group recently volunteered to conduct a cleanup at Mbayani Health Centre in Blantyre.
BLAYACO which was established in 2005 strives to promote youth participation in local governance, leadership, environmental protection and waste management among others.
Speaking after the cleanup, Noel Liondo who is the Executive Director for BLAYACO emphasized that youth have a huge responsibility towards contributing to the country’s development.
“We thought it wise to do this exercise because we want the youth to actively participate in matters of national importance and sanitation is among them.”
“We are also planning to do activities on sports and recreation for the youth be physically and mentally health.” Added the BLAYACO chief.
Ronald Frank Taulo who is In-charge of Mbayani health center expressed his gratitude towards the young people’s initiative.
“We are happy with the gesture taken by these young people and we really appreciate. This is the first time we have had such a development at this facility,” Taulo said.
“Others should also borrow a leaf from what BLAYACO has done. No matter how small the initiative may be, but we also want others to also do the same,” Taulo added.
The 16 year old Bwalo la Ana Youth Active Organisation is currently under restructuring to revitalize it as it has been idle for about 3 years.
