Self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, have handed themselves over to Lilongwe police.
The Bushiris have been in the news since the weekend after it emerged that they had escaped from South Africa where they are answering fraud and money laundering charges.
The incident annoyed many in the Rainbow Nation including members of parliament who demanded answers from their home affairs minister regarding how the two slipped through their borders.
In a statement signed by national police spokesperson James Kadadzera discloses that they made an arrest following an arrest warrant by InterPol that was issued on Monday in Pretoria.
A manhunt for the couple was then launched leading to their surrender in Lilongwe.
It remains to be seen if Bushiri and his wife’s decision to surrender themselves to local security officials will change the South African media’s narrative that their escape was aided by the Malawi government.
