Chiunda to remain in police custody

By Cortex Mzima

The suspended Malawi National Examinations Board-MANEB Director Gerald Chiunda and three others will remain in custody until next week.

Chiunda alongside Ishmael Uthman Jangiya, Joseph Chilombe and Owen Bester Kuntho have been arrested this week for allegedly failing to manage the 2020 MSCE examinations.

The four appeared before the Zomba First Grade Magistrate Court yesterday where they were found with a case to answer.

Magistrate Lisa Chingoli told the accused that they had a duty to safeguard the examinations under MANEB exams guidelines.

But all of them have denied the charges and the State is expected to parade 11 witnesses in the case.

Chiunda and Chilombe were arrested on February 3, 2021 while Kuntho and Jangiya were arrested on February 2, 2021.

The said examinations had to be withdrawn after massive leakage of a number of exam papers.

The examinations were re-administered this year and students completed seating for the MSCE last Friday.

Lawyer representing the accused Alfred Lungu of Gondwe Attorneys applied for bail in which the court will make its determination on Tuesday, next week.
