The country’s development partners are expressing satisfaction with the progress made by the government in responding to the food insecurity.

These are partners who pump in funding towards lean-season response and Social Cash Transfers.

They include the UK’s Department for International Development (DfID), United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Irish Aid in collaboration with Plan Malawi International.

Representatives of these institutions made a tour to Ulongwe in Balaka district in the just ended week to monitor progress of their support.

DfID Country Director, Dave Beer told the Malawi News Agency that the tour gave them a chance to appreciate the distribution of cash to vulnerable people.

Beer reveals that an interaction with some beneficiaries proved that the programme is transforming their lives.

Apart from the regular support of Social Cash Transfer, each beneficially also receives K23, 000 every month.

District Commissioner for Balaka, Emmanuel Bambe disclosed that 77,000 households face hunger in the district due to poor harvest last year.
