State Vice President Saulos Chilima has offered to carry out official duties on the prevention of the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking at the UTM rally in Blantyre yesterday, Chilima stressed that the government needs to ensure that coronavirus does not affect Malawi.

The Veep observed that the dissolution of the cabinet will likely affect efforts to prevent the outbreak, therefore he is ready to take up the task.

President Peter Mutharika appointed an 11 member cabinet committee to fight against the disease with a budget of 2.2 billion kwacha.

But Mutharika dissolved his cabinet on Friday, therefore frustrating the efforts and now all ministerial duties are under the Office of the President and Cabinet.

Chilima therefore said since he was not part of the cabinet, he is ready to champion awareness messages on the pandemic, as prevention is better than cure.

Currently, Malawi does not have confirmed cases of coronavirus but over 60 people are in self-quarantine having travelled in countries affected by the disease.

During his speech at Njamba Chilima also hit at the government for wasting money on hiring foreign lawyers for the elections case, instead of addressing the hunger situation. The Veep suspects that President Peter Mutharika is not told the truth about the hunger situation, hence not taking the matter seriously to save people’s lives.

He therefore sent a direct message to his boss that most households fail to have three meals a day and there is a need for an emergency aid.

The Malawi Electoral Commission is spending K600 million for hiring South African based lawyers on the 2019 presidential election appeals case.
