US pop star Rihanna has set aside funds to help Malawi effectively prevent the outbreak of coronavirus.

Her charity organisation, the Clara Lionel Foundation, has announced that it will donate five million dollars to Malawi and Haiti.

The foundation states that the money would be used to provide protective equipment, accelerating testing and care as well as training of health workers.

Through her foundation, Rihanna acknowledges that the most powerful weapon to fight the pandemic is preparedness for at risk communities.

The funds will be provided through various institutions such as the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and Partners in Health.

The pop star also visited the country two years ago to champion girl’s education and end early marriages.

Meanwhile, Malawi's President Peter Mutharika’s administration is facing intense criticism for allegedly politicising public awareness efforts on coronavirus in the country.

The government recently released a statement discouraging what it describes as unqualified personnel from sensitising the masses about the pandemic.

The statement was specifically directed at the opposition UTM and MCP who have launched public awareness campaigns on the virus.
