Minister of Health Jappie Mhango has made the announcement after confirming the death of a 51-year-old Malawian woman of Indian origin who returned from the UK. She was the fifth person to test positive for coronavirus in the country.

Mhango indicates that the woman had underlying health conditions.

The Blantyre District Health Office and the Environmental Health Team will assist with burial arrangements.

Of the new cases, two are from Blantyre and the other from Chikhwawa. The Blantyre cases include a 34-year-old woman who was in contact with the first case registered in the city.

The second case is a 28-year-old woman who travelled from London, UK on 19 March.

The third case is a 30-year-old man in Chikhwawa who travelled from South Africa on 16 March, 2020.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 8, including 1 death.

Meanwhile, the Covid-19 pandemic has dealt a huge blow to the fresh presidential election scheduled for 2 July this year.

This comes as the on-going voter registration and verification by the Malawi Electoral Commission is likely to be suspended as part of new measures to prevent further spread of the coronavirus.

This is according to the Chairperson of the Cabinet Committee on Covid-19 Jappie Mhango.
