The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has exposed alleged irregularities in the registration of national IDs and the voters’ rolls.

MCP President Lazarus Chakwera accuses the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) and the National Registration Bureau (NRB) of fraud.

Chakwera, who was visibly angry made the allegations during a media briefing on Wednesday in Lilongwe.

He believes that the two institutions are deliberately tampering with the voters roll to rig the forthcoming fresh presidential election.

The MCP leader cited alleged illegal registration of the under aged, unrealistic dates of birth and change of registrants’ names.

“Our team of investigators began by following a tip from Chikwawa where a young man’s identity was stolen,” Chakwera said.

He went on further to say that the young man identified as Ephraim found out that his personal details were already in the system way before he had reached an age of 18.

“In Ephraim’s case, his ID number was already registered in MEC’s database and was used as a fake voter in 2019 elections,” Chakwera explained.

According to the MCP leader, there are currently over 7000 minors with similar cases.

He alleges that since 2018, identity cards of minors have been used to create fake voters which were used during last year’s polls.

The MCP has assured the public that the matter will be taken to court for redress.

The party has since called for thorough auditing of MEC’s voters roll and also the the NRB’s ID database to ensure that stolen identities and other anomalies have been flushed out.

Officials from MEC and the NRB are yet to comment on the matter.
