Authorities in Likoma are warning people on the island against aiding the entry of illegal immigrants.

There are reports that some islanders are aiding and harbouring Tanzanian and Mozambican nationals despite the travel bans in and among the neighboring countries.

The people are taking advantage of the three countries’ porous borders thereby causing them to continue registering increased cases of the virus.

Likoma District Commissioner, Eric Nema, has told the Malawi News Agency that the underhand citizens use boats to facilitate entry of the foreigners during the night.

Nema has since revealed plans to engage traditional, political and religious leaders to deal with the malpractice.

The government has provided K30 million to Likoma district council to raise awareness on coronavirus and its preventative measures.
