Health Minister Jappie Mhango is this Monday set to officially respond to assertions concerning abuse of funds for coronavirus response.

He is expected to meet with the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) over a video clip showing him and Information Minister Mark Botomani tactfully trying to manipulate details about their hefty allowances.

The exposure has led to a huge public outcry regarding abuse of resources by senior public officers who have always denied drawing any stipends from the basket of funds.

Sections of society, including the HRDC have gone further to call for the exposed ministers’ voluntary resignation or dismissal on the basis of loss of public trust.

Speaking to Capital FM, HRDC national coordinator Luke Tembo stresses that the activists will not relent in their push for transparency and accountability by duty bearers with regard to public funds.

The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) has since requested President Peter Mutharika to fire the two ministers.

The organization threatens to write the country’s development partners to suspend or cease all funding towards the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Apart from the threat, CDEDI has filed a complaint to the Anti-Corruption Bureau to investigate the matter.
