The mystery surrounding the identity of the torch-bearer for the eight-party opposition alliance in the July 2 fresh presidential election has been solved.

Capital FM can confirm that Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera will lead the alliance ahead of State Vice-President and UTM leader Saulos Chilima.

The development follows the publication by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on Monday of a tentative programme for presentation of nomination papers by presidential candidates.

Since the two parties signed their partnership that includes six other entities over a month ago, the alliance has been keeping a tight lid regarding the identity of its leader going into the elections.

However, according to the MEC notice, Chakwera’s rather than Chilima’s name is the one appearing on a list that includes the governing DPP President Peter Mutharika and seven other contenders.

On Monday, Chilima told journalists in Lilongwe to exercise patience and wait for Wednesday to know who would lead the alliance and implored Malawians to accept whoever will be unveiled.

Apart from that, the Veep accused Mutharika of waging war against Malawians by allowing his followers to indulge in violence ahead of the polls.

His remarks followed a spate of violent attacks against opposition political parties reportedly undertaken by purported DPP supporters.

Presentation of nomination papers by the candidates is expected to take place on Wednesday and Thursday at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.
