An international school feeding charity organisation-Mary’s Meals plans to reach more than one million chronically hungry children with daily meals during this time when schools are closed.

Mary’s Meals Malawi Country Director, Bart Rombaut has revealed the development in a statement.

The government ordered the closure in March in a bid to control the spread of the coronavirus.

According to Rombaut, their vision is that every child receives one daily meal in their place of education and that all those who have more than they need, share with those who lack even the most basic things.

Rombaut explains that since the closure of the schools the organization has had to adapt quickly to assist those in need.

He then invites parents to collect the rations at school to cook at home starting with the lowest grades.

Rombaut hints that similar distribution models are already proving successful in Kenya and Haiti.

Mary’s Meals started the school feeding programme in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education.

The programme is set to improve enrolment, attendance, concentration during lessons, as well as reduce drop-out rates.

Malawi has registered 41 cases of the virus, 9 recoveries and three deaths.

Across the world, cases are at over 3.6 million with over 1.2 million recoveries and 250, 000 deaths.
