Karonga district is expected to have a coronavirus testing laboratory to cater for people entering into the country from Tanzania.

This follows revelations that 10 of the new patients of coronavirus are those coming from Tanzania.

These include truck drivers, transporters and business people who use the Songwe border.

The laboratory will be situated at the Malawi Epidemiology and Intervention Research Unit at Chilumba in the district.

Director of Health and Social Services, David Sibale indicates that the site is almost ready and will be operational any day this week.

Siwale believes the laboratory is expected to ease expenses the district hospital has been incurring in testing coronavirus specimens.

Currently, the district sends coronavirus suspects specimen to Mzuzu Central Hospital.

The coming in of the new centre will push the numbers up from seven to eight test labs.

The others labs are in Mzimba, Mzuzu, Lilongwe, Balaka, Zomba and two in Blantyre.
