Government has warned construction industry players against taking advantage of new Covid-19 pandemic to dismiss employees on poor economic performance pretext.

Minister of Transport and Public Works Ralph Jooma told Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Friday that much as sectors are economically affected by the pandemic there is an exception.

“Projects that are still properly running should ensure to retain staff. I give for example some construction sites who might be thinking of firing some of their employees in the guise of this pandemic.

“Firms should only resort to firing employees when they have really been affected by this disease,” he said.

The minister added that if projects are properly funded, there is no way firms should dismiss employees because of the pandemic.

He urged firms still in operation to ensure enforcement of government set rules.

“We ask them to ensure that they adhere to rules and regulations from health experts’ such as observing social distancing and operating in shifts to decongest work places,” Jooma said.

The country has so far registered 70 Covid-19 cases with three deaths.
