The Roads Authority is this weekend commencing repair works on the Thuchila bailey bridge almost a year after a mentally disturbed person allegedly scorched it last June.

At the time, however, the police dismissed the assertions after failing to find evidence connecting the lunatic to the arson.

In view of the rehabilitation plans which will involve replacement of the bridge’s damaged timber, the Authority will temporarily close the concerned section of the Robert Mugabe Highway from Sunday May 24 to May 25.

As such, motorists wishing to travel between Blantyre and Mulanje are advised to use the alternative Limbe-Thyolo-Muloza Road while those wishing to travel to Phalombe should use the Chiradzulu-Chiringa road.

However, motorist with smaller vehicles are encouraged to use the various alternative routes that are available around Nkando and Thuchila.

Meanwhile the Roads Authority is assuring the public that it will place appropriate signage at strategic places for easy direction of traffic and that works will be expedited to open the road as soon as possible.
