State Vice President Saulos Chilima has revealed that he will double as minister of finance in the next government should the opposition Tonse Alliance win the upcoming fresh presidential election.

Speaking during the alliance’s mass rally at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre yesterday, Chilima also announced that he will also champion reforms in the civil service just as he did earlier in the current regime.

The running mate to Tonse Alliance torch bearer Lazarus Chakwera was reacting to apparent skepticism from some sections of society regarding his UTM party’s significance in the electoral partnership.

Chilima stressed that his roles would be part of respecting the pact between Chakwera’s MCP and his UTM as well as seven other alliance partners.

Concerning the future, Chilima further revealed that he will be the alliance’s next torchbearer, taking over from current leader, Chakwera.

Taking his turn, Chakwera described Chilima as a unique individual whose special qualities have been underutilised by the DPP government.

He disclosed that once elected into office, he would ensure that the country greatly benefits from his deputy’s skills.

Prevailing uncertainty on dates for fresh presidential polls is being cited as the cause for frustration among electoral stakeholders including political parties and the public.

Despite MEC’s proposal of 2 July, the election date is yet to be confirmed as it awaits formal gazetting.

According to Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee chairperson Kezzie Msukwa the committee plans to convene soon to ascertain the date when the court-sanctioned election will be held.
