Malawi rakes in $39.4 million in tobacco sales

Malawi has raked in US$39.4 million from tobacco sales.

The figure comes from 25.8 million kilograms of tobacco that has been sold in the five weeks that markets have been open.

According to weekly updates from Auction Holdings Limited, the total earnings have gone up by 4.5 percent when compared to those of the 2019 marketing season.

By the fifth week of sales last year, the country had raked in US$37.7 million.

There however has been a drop in volumes sold by 7.2 percent from 27.8 million to 25.8 million in the past five months.

Tobacco production in Malawi is one of the nation's largest sources of income. As of 2005, Malawi was the 12th largest producer of tobacco leaves and the 7th largest global supporter of tobacco leaves.
