The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has started printing ballot papers ahead of the June 23 presidential election.

MEC Chairperson, Chifundo Kachale has revealed this in a statement.

Kachale explains that Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing LLC from the United Arab Emirates is aware that the election is set for June 23.

He indicates that the printing process will take a minimum of seven days.

The electoral materials may be received by MEC on June 19 at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, in the presence of party representatives.

Kachale further hints that the commission will soon engage the candidates on anticipated logistical challenges and possible mitigation measures.

Meanwhile. MEC can now breathe a sigh of relief as Government has allocated 29 billion kwacha for the fresh presidential election.

Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha has announced that said amount for the pools.

This comes against concerns from the electoral body that it lacks adequate funds to run the election.

The institution was faced with an 8 billion kwacha deficit following the decision by cooperation partners to withdraw MEC aid.

Malawians are expected to go to the polls on the 23 June.
