The Commonwealth of Nations is urging electoral and political stakeholders in the country to play their part in contributing to a peaceful and credible election.

In a statement, the Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland says Malawi’s democracy, stability and development hinge upon the credibility of the election.

Scotland advises the government and opposition to demonstrate leadership by honoring their commitment to democracy and respect for the rule of law.

She outlines this as enshrined in the constitution and reflected in the Commonwealth Charter.

She further underscores the Commonwealth Secretariat’s commitment to support home-grown initiatives  in the country that can contribute to a peaceful and credible process.

The Commonwealth has partnered with national institutions to support their contribution to the shared goal of a peaceful, credible and inclusive process.

These include the National Initiative for Civic Education-NICE, the Public Affairs Committee-PAC and the 50:50 Campaign Management Agency.
