Police in Chikwawa have arrested a 32-year-old woman for allegedly defrauding job seekers of over MK1 million, Malawi News Agency (Mana) has learnt.

Chikwawa Police Station Public Relations Officer, Dickson Matemba, identified the suspect as Shelie Mafunga.

Mafunga committed the offence early in January this year at Nchalo Trading Centre in the district.

Matemba said Mafunga tricked job seekers under the pretext of securing them jobs in a non-governmental organization called Partners in Hope.

“The unsuspecting victims sent her money through TNM Mpamba which amounted to over MK1 million,” he said.

The suspect disappeared before being arrested early this week after thorough investigations.

Matemba said Mafunga will appear in court soon to answer to the charge of obtaining money by false pretense which is contrary to Section 319 of the Penal Code.

Meanwhile, police in the district have issued a warning to would-be conmen to stop deceiving people or risk facing the law.
