The Malawi Red Cross Society with support from the Agricultural Transformation Initiative (ATI) has started rehabilitating the Mzimba District Hospital Covid-19 treatment center in an effort to ensure that the district is well prepared to treat Covid-19 patients as cases of the pandemic continue surging in the district.

The move according to Malawi Red Cross Society Communications and Humanitarian Diplomacy Specialist Felix Washoni is complementing the Government’s efforts in ensuring that the country has functional and well operational Covid-19 treatment centers.

“The Malawi Red Cross Society, amongst the many interventions that we are doing here in Mzimba in the fight against Covid-19, we are rehabilitating the Mzimba District Hospital Covid-19 treatment center. The idea is to come up with well-established and operational and equipped Covid-19 treatment center in the district,” Washoni said.

He said it is very crucial to have an operational and well equipped treatment center in the district since Mzimba is one of the high risk districts in the country due to those returning from South Africa.

“As you are aware that Mzimba is one of the high risk districts simply because it has a lot of people that work in South Africa and now with the effects of the lockdown in South Africa they have started to return home,” Washoni said.

He added; “So we have noticed that after conducting the tests, there are a good number of people that are testing positive from South Africa, so it very crucial in the fight against this pandemic that the district hospital has a well-established, equipped and operational Covid-19 treatment center.”

As part of Covid-19 preparedness, apart from tents which are used as treatment centers, the Mzimba district health office identified the district’s old hospital as a treatment center for Covid-19 patients but rehabilitation works were required before the facility became operational.

Rehabilitation works currently underway for the treatment center that will have two wards with a combined bed capacity of 24 are progressing well and they are expected to be completed by the end of next week.

Spokesperson for Mzimba South District Hospital Ulunji Luhanga has commended Malawi Red Cross Society for the support conceding that on their own they could not have managed to do the work since they have been overwhelmed by the pandemic.

“You know with this pandemic we are overwhelmed with the work that we are supposed to do and as the district hospital we cannot do everything on our own. We depend on our partners and we are very grateful to Malawi Red Cross Society for rehabilitating the treatment center,” Luhanga said.

Apart from rehabilitating the Mzimba District Hospital Covid-19 treatment center, with support from ATI, Malawi Red Cross Society is also rehabilitating the Covid-19 treatment center at Mangochi District Hospital.

The donor, ATI has pumped in MK108 million for the rehabilitation of the two treatment centers in Mangochi and Mzimba.

Malawi Red Cross Society has been a trusted partner for Mzimba District Hospital in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. The organization has supported the district health office with a number of interventions among them training of volunteers who are sensitizing people on prevention of the pandemic through door to door campaigns.

Mzimba South is facing a surge in Covid-19 cases. Cumulatively, the district has recorded 45 cases of which seven are health workers with one death and 11 recoveries as of Wednesday just about a month after it recorded the first case.
