The police have confirmed the arrest of Norman Chisale who was former President Peter Mutharika's bodyguard.

Speaking to Capital FM, National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera discloses that the charges will be made public once they have completed their investigation.

Social media reports however indicate that Chisale has been arrested over his connection to the cement procurement scandal.

In the procurement deal, it is alleged that Mutharika imported duty-free some 1.2 million bags of cement valued at about MK5 billion between November 2018 and December 2019.

A report in the Daily Times newspaper quotes documents sourced from the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) confirming the importations in three tranches dated 28 November 2018, 1 July 2019 and 16 December 2019.

The fresh revelation cancels out initial accounts that Mutharika had imported 400,000 bags of cement duty-free using his presidential privilege.
