The Police in Dowa are keeping in custody a teenage Congolese national for allegedly defiling a 3-year-old girl.

It is alleged that the suspect committed the offence last Saturday at Katubyza location which is within Dzaleka Refugee camp.

In a statement, Dowa Police Public Relations Officer Gladson M’bumpha explains that on the day of the incident the victim’s mother had gone to the market to sell dried fish.

The victim was left in the care of her elder sister.

M’bumpha further explains that the mother discovered what had occurred in her absence after she had returned home in the afternoon to cook for her children.

The matter was then reported to the Police and a medical report from Dzaleka Health Centre later confirmed that the girl had indeed been defiled.

The suspect will appear before court soon to answer a charge of defilement contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.
