Govt imposes ban on livestock markets due to outreak foot and mouth disease

The government has imposed a ban on livestock movement and marketing activities in some parts of the lower Shire following an outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease (FMD).

This follow the detection of the disease at Maperera dip tank of Livunzu extension planning area in Chikwawa district which is under Shire Valley ADD.

About 12 clinical cases out 85 herds of cattle which were examined in about 20 affected kholas.

In a statement by the ministry of agriculture is further stopping all livestock slaughters and sale of animal products.

Meanwhile the ministry is revealing that it would embark on a massive vaccination of animals in all the affected areas.

FMD is one of the most contagious viral disease which mostly affects cattle, sheep, goats and pigs.
