Dowa man in cooler for alleged rape

The Police in Dowa have arrested a Congolese man for allegedly raping a 27-year-old woman at Dzaleka Refugee Camp.

The 30-year-old suspect identified as Abubaka Sidiki is alleged to have raped the woman who is also a Congolese national yesterday afternoon.

 

According to a statement signed by the districts police spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha, Sidiki and the victim are neighbours and the victim’s husband is currently in South Africa.

M’bumpha explains that Sidiki broke into the victim’s house as she was sleeping in the afternoon.

He then entered her bedroom and demanded that he have sexual intercourse with her by force.

Despite the struggle, the victim was overpowered and Sidiki forced himself on her.

The matter was later reported to the police and a medical exam conducted at Dzaleka Health Centre proved that the woman was indeed raped.

Following the incident, the suspect was arrested and he will appear before court soon to answer a charge of rape.

Both the suspect and the victim are from South Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Dowa is one of the districts were the crime rate is increasing at it has registered a 14.2 percent rise in criminal cases.

Statistics from the district’s police, indicate that the district registered 270 criminal cases from January to August this year.

During the same period last year, the district registered 236 cases.
