Malawi Police Service plans to develop sports policy

Sports activities and processes within the Malawi Police Service (MPS) are expected to improve following plans to develop a sports policy for the organisation.

Chairperson of the Service’s national sports board committee, Gift Chiundira, confirmed this on Tuesday during a consultation meeting with relevant stakeholders at the Northern Region Police Headquarters

He said development of the policy will help in guiding how to manage sporting activities within the police service.

“For a long time, the organization has been running sports affairs without a guiding document, which has been making it difficult for the organization to mobilize resources for sports development,” Chiundira said.

He added; “The policy will be a tool that will guide the police service on how to mobilize resources towards various sporting events. The document will offer guidance on how to accomplish objectives, goals and priorities to raise the profile of sporting activities in the organization.”

Chiundira stated that currently the task team is carrying out regional consultation meetings to gather information from Officers In-Charge, regional and station sports coordinators, and administration officers on issues to be incorporated in the policy document.

Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Northern Region Patrick Teleka commended the committee for the policy development plans, saying it will go a long way in the running of sporting activities within the police service.

“Such a document is very important in an organization that has a vision in developing sports activities. Therefore, I urged police officers to build and have a strong passion for sports,” Teleka said.

The Malawi Police Service has numerous sports disciplines including football, netball, volleyball, chess, darts and many others.
