Court orders Mutharika to cover costs for judges case

The High Court in Lilongwe has ordered former President, Peter Mutharika and former Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Lloyd Muhara to cover costs incurred in the case where the two were accused of un-procedurally sending Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda on forced leave.

The two were faulted by the court months ago after they had tried to send Nyirenda and Justice Edward Twea on forced leave pending their retirement.

The court however gave a chance to the two to be heard before a determination on the costs was made.

High Court Judge Charles Mkandawire has today ruled that Mutharika and Muhara must personally settle the costs of the petitioners who are: the Human Rights Defenders Coalition, the Magistrates Association, Women Lawyers Association of Malawi and the Malawi Law Society.

Lawyer representing the claimants Khumbo Soko reveals that their legal team will soon assess the costs to be served to the two.
