The Limbe Senior Magistrate court has sentenced a 31 year old man to 12 years imprisonment for defilement.

This comes as the public continues to express concern over such cases which are reported by the media almost on a weekly basis.

According to a document signed by Limbe police deputy publicist Widson Nhlane, the convict Beyard Banda defiled the girl at his home in Matenje area in the township of Machinjiri.

The court heard that Banda defiled the 12 year old girl three times in June this year while his wife and children were away.

He then told her not to tell anyone and gave her 400 kwacha to keep her mouth shut. However when the victim’s friends noticed that she had been spending a lot of time in Banda’s house, they quizzed her about it and she revealed the ordeal.

Nhlane adds that after the mother of the victim was told of what had occurred while she was away, she reported the matter to police.

The girl was then referred to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital where it was confirmed that she was indeed defiled. Banda pleaded guilty and asked the court for leniency stressing that he has dependants who will suffer in his absence.

The presiding Magistrate Martin Chipofya however gave Banda a 12 year custodial sentence which he says would serve as a deterrent to other would-be offenders.
