Dowa to host Mental Health Day commemorations

The Ministry of Health and Population Services has earmarked Dowa to host this year’s national commemoration for World Mental Health Day which is slated for 10 October 10, 2019 under the theme: “Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention”.

The commemoration is set to be presided over by Minister responsible, Jappie Mhango.

Speaking on Friday in Dowa during a preparatory meeting for the event, Assistant Director for Clinical Services responsible for Mental Health in the Ministry, Michael Udedi said a number of activities have been planned to oppose social stigma and raise awareness on suicide.

Udedi said that the Ministry would be engaging the media to disseminate messages on mental health and suicide prevention.

Dowa Director of Health and Social Services, Peter Makoza applauded the Ministry for considering hosting the event in Dowa.

Initiated by the World Federation for Mental Health in 1992 (WFMH), World Mental Health Day is an International day of observance recognized by the World Health Organization on October 10th every year.

Last year's international theme was Youth and Mental Health, with this year's theme being Suicide Prevention.
