The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is expected to register new voters for the November 5 parliamentary and local government by-elections. The parliamentary polls will be held in Lilongwe South Constituency and local government elections for Matenje Ward in Kasungu North West constituency.

MEC will conduct both the voter registration and verification exercise on the 10th and 11th October. MEC Commissioner Mary Nkosi says those who will turn 18 before or on 11 October will be able to register for the by-elections.

According to Nkosi, MEC wants to give a chance to all the voters to vote en-masse during the forthcoming by elections. She warns that the commission will not accommodate transfers in the by-elections.

Meanwhile, aspiring Members of Parliament for Lilongwe South constituency have made a pledge of peace and to practice issue based politics. They made the pledge at the launch of the parliamentary by-election activities at Malingunde on Sunday, ahead of the November 5 polls.

Malawi Congress Party aspirant Peter Dimba, who is seeking re-election, urges his fellow candidates to stop politics of castigation during rallies. Dimba advocated for an issue based campaign to ensure a peaceful and credible election.

Echoing his call, Democratic Progressive Party aspirant Frank Mazizi says he is ready to run an issue based campaign.

Speaking to the Malawi News Agency, MEC Commissioner Moffat Banda also appealed for total participation of voters during the polls.
