President Peter Mutharika has assured football arch rivals Nyasa Big Bullets and Be-forward Wanderers that funds for their promised stadia will be included in the coming budget.

The president said this at a meeting he held with officials of the two teams yesterday at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.

The meeting emanated from a request the teams made at Football Association of Malawi-FAM offices in Blantyre when they were receiving funds from the Minister of Sports.

During the official handover of money from the government to the two teams at Mpira Village, the two teams asked the minister to connect them to the president.

Yesterday, the teams were called to meet Mutharika and express their concerns about football in Malawi.

The issue that took center-stage was the two stadia which the president promised them last year during the campaign period, ahead of the May 21 polls.

The president assured the teams that he will make sure that the construction starts soon by facilitating for a provision in the national budget.

Minister of Sports Francis Phiso expressed gratitude for the assurance by the president stressing that it demonstrates his commitment to developing sports in the country;

Speaking for Nyasa Big Bullets, the CEO for Nyasa Manufacturing Company Fleetwood Haiya indicated that they are very thankful to the president.

He said that many people thought this was just a campaign tool but with the president continuing with it after elections, it only shows that he is serious about the project.

His counterpart Gift Mkandawire, who is Chairperson of Wanderers football club, concurred with him. In his words, the FAM President Walter Nyamilandu said the construction of the stadia will be a milestone in the development of football in the country.
