President Chakwera has lashed out at Parliament’s Public Appointments Committee-PAC for rejecting his proposed appointment of Martha Chizuma as Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
Leaked results from Tuesday’s interview suggest that the firebrand Ombudsman failed to impress the committee although she performed excellently during a more technical interview several weeks ago.
The development has sparked anger among various sections of the Malawian society considering Chizuma’s impressive accomplishments in her current position as public protector.
While calling on the House to reconsider the decision, Chakwera stressed that yesterday’s development only serves to delay his administrations drive to root out corruption in the public service and other sectors of society.
Earlier, Leader of House Richard Chimwendo Banda moved a motion asking the committee to avail the house with a detailed report of what informed its decision to reject Chizuma’s appointment.
According to the motion, the report must be presented to the whole House for members to decide on the way forward.
Seconding the motion, Likoma legislator Ashems Songwe insisted that the conduct and decisions of Parliamentary committees must be seen to be just, in order to maintain the credibility of the House.
After today’s meeting, the committee is expected to present a detailed report next Monday, when the house reconvenes.
