Malawi govt to review energy institutions

The government has embarked on a functional review of some energy institutions to effectively implement the turnaround plans in the sector.

The exercise targets the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA), Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) and National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA).

The Energy Minister Newton Kambala told journalists in Blantyre over the weekend that a number of investments have delayed due to absence of the MERA board.

Kambala also observed flaws at NOCMA and has since directed that the current round of tendering be cancelled, until a credible management is instituted.

He assured the public that the cancellation of fuel tendering will not deprive Malawians to access petroleum products in the country.

He has also instructed ESCOM to clear all connection backlogs by June 2021.
