Malawi Police dismiss shot-to-kill reports

Police authorities are trashing as distortion of facts media reports suggesting that a Polytechnic student was shot on his way to night prayers.

It follows an online petition calling for justice for the Blessings Nyondo, who was shot by security personnel at Kwacha Roundabout in Blantyre on New Year’s Eve.

According to a police statement, Nyondo is a robbery suspect who was shot by a Malawi Broadcasting Corporation – MBC security officer in an attempt to disable him.

It states that while trying to flee a crime scene where he and his accomplices had allegedly robbed a woman, Nyondo forced himself into a passing MBC vehicle claiming that some assailants were after him.

However, upon noticing that he was sitting next to an armed officer, Nyondo attempted to snatch the rifle and after a brief struggle, he jumped out of the vehicle heading for the Njamba Park woods.

National police spokesperson and signatory of the statement, James Kadadzera, claims that this was the moment that the MBC security officer discharged his gun to disable Nyondo.

According to the statement, while officers were attending to the suspect, a distressed woman appeared claiming that she had been robbed by three young men and immediately identified Nyondo as one of the trio.

A case file for robbery has since been opened for Nyondo, who is currently receiving treatment at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, and his two accomplices who are still at large.
