The Malawi Red Cross Society-MRCS has donated assorted Personal Protective Equipment-PPEs worth K17.7 million to Chikwawa District Council for use in Covid-19 treatment units.
The items include buckets, sanitizers, hand washing soap, tablets of soap, basins and one water tank allocated to Kasinthula Treatment Unit.
According to MRCS Project Coordinator Mercy Chalimba, the donation is in response to the pandemic under the EU funded Prevent, Control and Contain Covid-19 project.
Chalimba observed that most places in the district require special attention following the pandemic such as markets, schools and border points.
The District’s Director of Health and Social Services Starlin Zinkanda hailed MRCS for the support, saying the border district needs more support.
Zinkanda told the Malawi News Agency that there is need to increase space for the treatment unit, which currently accommodates only five patients.
So far, Chikwawa has recorded 135 confirmed coronavirus cases with 7 deaths.
